Recently I was privileged to witness an exciting demonstration and proof of concept which left me reflecting on how quickly the Drone Industry is evolving.
During a break whilst conducting a TQ UK Level 5 Award for Drone Operations Managers, two of our candidates, Lee Newman and Simon Stretch both senior managers at the London Fire Brigade Drone Team kindly organised an amazing demonstration.
HELIGUY Head of Training, Jack Sharp, took control of a small drone and successfully flew a procedure culminating in hovering over a small drinking cup containing a small token about the size of a 20p piece with a number printed on it. After adjusting the camera resolution, it was possible for all the observers to read the number.
What was amazing was that Jack was operating the control unit in Newcastle upon Tyne and the Drone was flying in Grimsby, Ontario near Niagara Falls, Canada, 3500 miles away.
Previously this was only available using military technology but now using commercially available drones it can be achieved.
In a new joint trial between NHS and healthcare logistics startup Apian, a Drone successfully flew 5 packs of blood samples between Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s Wansbeck Hospital and Alnwick Infirmary, and back again.
They travelled over a 68km journey in a total of 61 minutes, beyond the pilot’s visual line of sight (BVLOS).
